No estaría nada mal que en tus articles y essays introdujeras algún que otro dicho. Pero, ¡cuidado!, no abuses (uno o dos como mucho en cada escrito) y, sobre todo, asegúrate de que encajan en el contexto, que están correctamente utilizadas y que no quedan fuera de lugar (en este sentido, debes evitarlas a toda costaen formal letters y reports).
Dicho esto, doy comienzo a lo que voy a llamar “Online workshop: English idiomatic expressions translated into Spanish” o “Taller online bilingüe de frases hechas”. Se dará información de las más utilizadas y su equivalente aproximado en español. Es decir, la versión en español intentará llevar la misma carga semántica y registro de la versión inglesa. De esta manera, espero que te sea más fácil saber cómo trasladarlas a tus escritos.
Es éste un taller, lo que significa que tu participación, con cualquier duda o sugerencia que tengas, es bienvenida.

Con frecuencia se utiliza parcialmente (the silver lining), por lo que en algunas ocasiones no se puede traducir al español con la expresión equivalente, sino con otras como: “el lado positivo”, “el lado bueno”,“consuelo”, “mostrarse optimista”. Fíjate en estos ejemplos:

It's not rocket science / It doesn't take a rocket scientist (it is not very complicated or difficult to understand.)= No hace falta ser un genio.
Drugs equals crime. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out: Las drogas y el crimen son la misma cosa. No hace falta ser un genio para entender eso.
A picture is worth a thousand words=Una imagen vale más que mil palabras.
A rolling stone gathers no moss=Renovarse o morir / Piedra movediza, moho no cobija / Piedra movediza no cría moho / Piedra que ruerda no cría moho
Es curioso porque el proverbio inglés tiene dos interpretaciones:
1)"People say this to mean that an ambitious person is more successful than a person not trying to achieve anything".
En español el dicho "Piedra movediza, moho no cobija" (también "Piedra movediza no cría moho" o "Piedra que rueda no cría moho"), según el Centro Virtual Cervantes, recomienda ser activo y constante en el trabajo para mejorar la condición. Por tanto, se ajusta a la primera interpretación del proverbio inglés.
Revenge is a dish best served cold= La venganza es un plato que se sirve frío / La venganza se sirve en plato frío.

Estaexpresiónnace de la mala praxis periodística. Viene a decir que lo importante es ser el primero en publicar la noticia sin contrastar y si resulta ser falsa o inexacta se suplanta por otra en vez de rectificarla o se corrige rápida y hábilmente con fórmulas que eluden la rectificación o fe de errores. Va en la línea de la frase "No dejes que la realidad te estropee un buen titular".

En esta entrada vamos a incluir phrases y expresiones útiles de los niveles B2, C1 y C2. A la izquierda de la mayoría de ellas se puede ver de qué nivel es, según el diccionario online Cambridge. Aunque algunas de las expresiones tratadas no sean del nivel del que te vas a examinar, no te vendrá mal aprenderlas. Esta entrada se irá completando progresivamente con más términos, así que estate atent@ a las actualizaciones
periódicas

En este vídeo se explican 10 expresiones informales habituales en inglés, algunas de inglés americano:
1)In layman's terms:Para los profanos o legos en la materia. I will explain the financial crisis in layman's terms. 2)C1Let alone. B2Not to mention:Y mucho menos . Y ya no hablemos de..., y para qué hablar de..., por no hablar de..., sin mencionar.Se utilizan estas expresiones para dar énfasis. Registro semi-formal.Puedes emplearlo en opinion articles, reviews, essays, y en general en escritos que tengan un componente de subjetividad.
Si se utiliza let alone, la frase que le precede debe ser negativa, explícita o implícitamente: The baby can't even walk, let alone run: El bebé no sabe andar, y mucho menos correr. I was so ill I wasn't able to get up, let alone work: Estaba tan enferma que no pude levantarme, y mucho menos trabajar.
Not to mention admite frases previas afirmativas o negativas: The hotel has spacious and tastefully decorated rooms, not to mention excellent customer service: El hotel tiene habitaciones espaciosas y decoradas con gusto, sin mencionar su excelente servicio al cliente.

Estas expresiones no son formales ni informales completamente, están a medio camino. Se utilizan en el lenguaje hablado pero también en discursos. Asimismo, se suelen ver en articles, reviews, opinion essays. Las evitaría en textos más formales como los reports, CVs o covering letters.
If youtakea job as a journalist, it goes without saying that sometimes you'll have to work at weekends: Si trabajas de periodista, no hace falta decir que tendrás que trabajar los fines de semana. "Poor Threadbear! Imagine having a squeaker that doesn't squeak! No one seems able to mend it, and Threadbear is afraid that Ben won't love him because he's a little bit imperfect.
